When you’re entertaining a crowd, it’s common to feel like you don’t have enough hands. Make it easy to transport the eating essentials to your table all in one go with this cute cutlery caddy (that upcycles an old cutting board and a quartet of cans). Not only will these make carrying things quicker and keep your table top tidy, they’ll also help reduce traffic to and from the kitchen and pantry so that you and your guests will have more opportunities to enjoy each other’s company.

You will need:

• Long wooden serving board (we recommend using one with a handle)
• 4 x clean, empty tin cans
• Resene testpots in your choice of colours 
• Resene Aquaclear
• Resene testpot brush
• Wood glue
• Circular saw or similar
• Electric drill
• Screws

Step 1: Take a long wooden serving board (we recommend using one with a handle) and carefully cut it in half using a saw. Lightly sand the cut edges, going along the grain, then thoroughly wipe down your board and any nearby surfaces using a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust.

Step 2: Paint the two pieces in your chosen Resene colours. For optimum ease, we recommend painting one side of each board first. Leave them to dry paint-side up before repeating on the other side.

Step 3: Apply wood glue along the base of the top half and sit it directly in the centre of the bottom piece. Measure the halfway point to ensure total accuracy.

Step 4: Turn it upside down and screw along the base to secure the base piece to the top. Be careful to keep the boards steady while you do this. Any movement while the glue is still wet could result in the board being screwed on wonky.

Step 5: Stir your Resene Aquaclear with a wide, flat stirrer. Evenly apply over the combined two boards with a brush, then leave to dry.

Step 6: Paint four clean, empty tin cans and leave to dry. If you are applying multiple coats, allow each coat to dry before applying the next. When you’ve reached your desired number of application, apply Resene Aquaclear and leave to dry once more (allow for at least two hours between coats).

Step 7: Once all four tins are dry, screw the cans to the base board using an extended bit. Fill with utensils for an easy caddy during your next barbeque.
